MECHANICAL TO ELECTRICAL CONVERSION PROGRAMME

Aims

This programme is designed for Craftsmen/Technicians who have no previous electrical background, to enable them to work on specific electrical tasks competently and safely.

Outcome

Successful completion will mean that the delegate has passed a range of competence assessments including isolation, termination of a range of cables, plugs and sockets, replacing and resetting protective devices, replacing motors and sensors on a like-for-like basis and a written assessment covering underpinning knowledge and understanding.

Mechanical to Electrical Conversion Programme (Part 1)

Content

  • Health and Safety.
  • Relevant parts of BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations and Electricity at Work Regulations.
  • Emergency isolation.
  • BSEN: 60617 symbols.
  • Methods of protection including fuses, circuit breakers and RCD's.
  • Cables/systems: termination of single core and sheathed cables.
  • Connection to BS EN60309-2 and BS1363 plugs.
  • Circuits: connect one-way, two-way lighting circuits and ring and radial socket outlet circuits.
  • Supplies: single and three phase supplies up to 400 V.
  • Earthing and bonding.
  • Use of instruments to include continuity and insulation testing.
  • Theory to support the practical activities listed above.

Assessment

Practical competence-based assessments and a multi-choice written paper to test knowledge and understanding.

Certification

Following satisfactory completion  of all three parts of the programme, a City and Guilds 6394 certificate, listing the practical competences successfully carried out, will be issued.

Duration

4 days (09.00 - 16.00 hours each day).
