Who is eligible for an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are available to your employees if they are over 16 when the apprenticeship begins.

I am looking to recruit an apprentice. Will the college help me to find a suitable candidate?

Yes. The College will assist you throughout the recruitment process. We can help with advertising, interviewing and short listing of potential applicants. In addition the college has a number of young people who have already started on their apprenticeship and are now looking for an employer to sponsor them through to completion.

Will there be a mountain of paperwork involved in recruiting or setting up an Apprenticeship?

Prospects College will support you through the training process by working with you to set up your training programme and managing assessments. We will provide support for both you and your apprentice to make sure you both get the best out of the training. Starting at the point when you want to recruit an apprentice, we will be with you every step of the way.

Who pays the training costs?

There is no cost to the employer for recruitment, assessment, training and certification if your apprentice is aged 16–18 years. All the training costs are met by Prospects College through a Learning and Skills Council grant. If your apprentice is aged 19-24, you will be asked to make a contribution to the cost of the training programme.

What will I have to pay an apprentice?

If the apprentice is aged 16-18 then the minimum weekly wage is £95.

How many other companies have sponsored an apprentice through Prospects College?

Since their introduction in 1994, over 375 businesses have taken part in the construction apprenticeship programme and over 400 have taken part in the Engineering Apprenticeship programme.

How are apprenticeships developed and who sets the course content?

Apprenticeships are designed by business for business. Sector Skills Councils composed of business representatives from the construction and engineering industry decide on the course content. As they genuinely understand your business, the training will be relevant to what you do.
