The construction industry employs a large number of people throughout the UK and covers a wide variety of projects ranging from new roads and airports through to house extensions.  The traditional focus of the industry has been on the building of houses, offices and factories, and on large-scale civil engineering projects such as bridges and motorways.  Now, however, a considerable amount of work involves the restoration and refurbishment of existing buildings.

The industry is constantly tackling new and increasingly complex projects, which requires a well trained, skilled workforce.  Essential to any project are the traditional trade or craft skills which offer many opportunities for interesting and challenging work.  In construction no project is the same, so the work is varied and every day is different.
