Step Up in Life

School to Careers

Want to do something different?

Are you 14-16 and feel you have outgrown school?  Do you want to learn new skills that will prepare you for a worthwhile job?

If you are still at school and about to enter Year 10 or Year 11 you could now chose a vocational course with Prospects College as one of your GCSE options. The courses are called School to Careers.

Already more than 100 pupils from local schools are attending courses with Prospects College covering both Engineering and Construction awards.

There is a course available to suit your needs and abilities. If you are expecting to achieve good GCSE passes then you could enrol on a level 2 course which will award two GCSE A*-C passes if you successfully complete the course. If you are less academically focused and more interested in practical skills there are also courses for you. You do not need to have good predicted GCSE grades to get on a vocational course.

For more information about these opportunities please ask your form tutor to check whether your school is participating in the School to Careers programme.

Case Studies

Kane Morgan

Kane joined Prospects College in December 2003 on the Schools to Careers Programme as a year 11 student.  He would be the first to admit that he had become uninterested in the academic route that school had to offer.  He continued on this programme until leaving school in July 2004, doing basic bricklaying skills.

He rejoined the College on the Entry to Employment programme in September 2004 to further his training and work towards accessing an apprenticeship.  In January 2005 he moved a step nearer to this aim by transferring to Programme Led Pathway, gaining the Prospects Bricklaying Certificates Part 1 and Part 2, in January and February 2005 respectively.  He gained a City and Guilds qualification in May 2005 and a pass on CSCS Health and Safety Test, one of the requirements needed to gain access to sites in the Construction Industry, followed shortly afterwards.
